A Little Swallow Heading Somewhere New

There is something so hopeful about the sight of a swallow in flight. That familiar silhouette, with its outstretched wings and forked tail, appears in our skies as the days become longer and warmer, bringing with it the feeling that a new season has begun.

This sterling silver swallow has been hand pierced from sheet silver, carefully cut out by hand at my jeweller’s bench before being filed, polished and finished. It hangs simply from a sterling silver chain so that the little bird becomes the focus of the necklace.

The Story Behind the Jewellery

Swallows have long been associated with hope, renewal and new beginnings. Their return each year has traditionally been a welcome sign that winter is ending and brighter days are on their way.

For this necklace, I wanted the swallow to be captured right in the middle of its journey — wings spread and flying onwards. There’s something I particularly love about that idea. It isn't arriving or leaving; it is simply moving forward.

Handmade in my North Norfolk workroom, the necklace sits beautifully alongside the other swallow pieces in my Through the Garden Gate Collection, carrying the same little symbol of summer, freedom and optimism.

Meaning & Gifting

A swallow can be a particularly meaningful gift for someone beginning a new chapter — a new home, a new job, retirement or simply a change in direction. It can also be a lovely reminder for someone who has been through a difficult period that there are brighter days ahead.

Or perhaps you don't need an occasion at all. Sometimes a little silver swallow flying forwards is simply a rather lovely thing to wear.
