Liam's Story – Silver, Songs and 25 Years of Marriage

Some commissions are about so much more than the piece of jewellery itself. They're about memories, shared experiences and finding a way to bring all those things together into something that can be worn and treasured.

Liam contacted me in the summer, looking for a special gift for his wife Jo to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on 8th September. Traditionally, the 25th anniversary is celebrated with silver, and as Jo loves silver jewellery, it seemed the perfect place to start.

Although they live in Hertfordshire, Jo grew up in Norfolk and they both love spending time on the North Norfolk coast, particularly around Thornham. Liam wanted something that would remind her of a place she loves, but there was another rather lovely part to the story.

When Jo was a little girl, she would listen to Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water on the radio in her parents' car. She particularly loved the reference to the 'Silver Girl', imagining that the song was about her. It became a favourite song, and over the years Liam had included references to it in gifts for her.

With their silver wedding anniversary approaching, it seemed especially fitting to bring that childhood memory into a new piece of silver jewellery.

We explored different ideas before settling on my Sea Treasures necklace, with its connection to the Norfolk coastline. Liam wanted to include a line from the song, along with the date of their wedding in 2001 and their silver anniversary in 2026.

There were quite a few emails backwards and forwards as we worked out how to bring everything together. Liam was determined to get every detail just right, and I loved how much thought he was putting into creating something that would be so personal to Jo.

Eventually, all the decisions were made, the engraving was completed and the finished necklace was carefully packaged and sent off to Liam, ready for their anniversary.

One of the loveliest parts of my job is receiving a message when a commission has arrived, particularly when I've spent time working closely with someone to create it. Liam wrote to tell me how delighted he was with the necklace, describing it as everything he'd hoped for. He also mentioned how much he appreciated the little personal card I'd included for Jo.

I love the thought of Jo wearing her Sea Treasures necklace, with its reminders of Norfolk, a song from her childhood and the 25 years she and Liam have spent together.

A silver necklace for a silver anniversary, carrying a lifetime of memories and a story that belongs entirely to them.
